Environmental control for mite allergy is a "three-legged stool" strategy — allergen-proof bedding, washing protocols, and humidity control — working synergistically, these three can drastically reduce the concentration of indoor mite allergens.
First leg: Encase mattresses, box springs, comforters, and pillows in certified allergen-proof encasements — choose products with a fabric pore size <6 μm (mites cannot pass through).
Second leg: Washing protocol — wash bed sheets and pillowcases weekly in hot water above 60 °C (high heat kills mites and washes away allergens).
For items that cannot be washed in hot water, place them in a dryer on high heat for at least 15 minutes or freeze for 48 hours.
Third leg: Indoor humidity control — maintain relative humidity consistently below 50% (using a dehumidifier or air conditioning in summer/humid seasons).
Ancillary measures are equally important — vacuum once a week with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter (reduces allergens on carpet and furniture surfaces), minimize upholstered furniture and carpets (prioritize hard flooring and wipeable leather/wood furniture), replace fabric curtains with wipeable blinds, do not store off-season clothes in the bedroom (clothing piles are dust and mite accumulation hotspots), and freeze plush toys for 48 hours (to kill any mites that may be harboring inside).
Good environmental control can reduce indoor mite allergen concentrations by 80–90%.
