The most effective strategy for controlling dust mites is based on reducing their survival conditions rather than using chemical acaricides.

① Humidity control — this is the most important measure of all.

Keep indoor relative humidity below 50% — dust mites cannot absorb sufficient water from the air through their cuticle when humidity is below 50% and will die of dehydration within 1–2 weeks.

Using a dehumidifier during humid seasons and in damp rooms is the cornerstone of dust mite control.

② Bedding management — use allergen-impermeable, zippered covers certified as "dust mite proof" for mattresses, box springs, pillows, and comforters; the pore size of these fabrics is smaller than the size of dust mite fecal particles (<10 microns), preventing the escape of dust mite allergens from within the mattress and pillow.

Wash bed sheets, duvet covers, and pillowcases weekly in hot water above 60 °C — 60 °C can kill dust mites and their eggs during the wash cycle.

③ Reduce soft surfaces — carpets, upholstered sofas, and heavy drapes are "reservoirs" for dust mites.

If possible, use hard flooring (wood or tile) instead of carpet in bedrooms.

④ HEPA-filter vacuuming — vacuum mattress surfaces and carpets weekly using a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter (HEPA filters capture dust mite allergens rather than exhausting them back into the air).

⑤ Damp-wipe instead of dry-dusting — dry-dusting stirs up allergen-laden dust.

⑥ Place plush toys in the freezer for 24 hours weekly or wash in 60 °C hot water — to kill any hiding dust mites.
