DIY Pest Control Tools & PPE Checklist
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile, not latex), N95 mask or half-face respirator, safety goggles or face shield, long-sleeved protective clothing, closed-toe non-slip shoes â PPE is NOT optional when handling pesticides
Inspection tools: Bright flashlight or headlamp (keeps both hands free), magnifying glass (10x or phone macro mode), old credit card (scraping crevices for eggs), moisture meter (checking wall and wood moisture content), infrared thermometer (detecting cold/hot spots in walls)
Sealing materials: Neutral silicone caulk (waterproof mold-resistant type for indoor use), expanding foam (stuff with steel wool first before filling large holes), stainless steel wool (rodent-specific â rodents cannot chew through it), door sweeps (rubber or brush type), stainless steel fine mesh (under 1mm openings for vent pest screens)
Trapping tools: Cockroach sticky traps/glue boards, rodent glue boards (place along wall edges on runways), fly paper/sticky fly strips, pheromone traps (for clothes moths and stored product pests), mosquito ovitraps (for monitoring yard mosquito density)
Chemical products (use with caution): Cockroach/ant gel bait (boric acid or dinotefuran based â apply in dots, keep away from children and pets), Bti mosquito dunks (kills only mosquito larvae, safe for humans and pets), food-grade diatomaceous earth (apply along baseboards and in crevices in dry conditions â scratches insect cuticle causing dehydration death)
Cleaning equipment: HEPA-filter vacuum cleaner (clean mattresses, carpets, sofas â traps insect eggs and allergens), steam cleaner (high-temperature steam kills all bed bug and flea life stages â steam must reach 60C or above), dehumidifier (maintain indoor humidity below 50% to suppress dust mites and flea larvae)
Documentation tools: Phone camera (photograph pest evidence and before/after treatment comparison), notebook or spreadsheet (record date found, location, pest type, treatment, results â pest control logs are the core of IPM)
Safety rules: Read the complete label before using any chemical product, never spray pesticides in areas where children and pets are active, wash hands thoroughly after handling any chemical product, store all products in a locked cabinet away from children â if DIY treatment shows no improvement after 2 weeks, immediately contact a licensed professional company
