Food Storage Pest Prevention Checklist
Grains and rice: Freeze newly purchased rice, flour, and grains at -18C for 48 hours before storage â this kills any existing eggs; then transfer to airtight containers at room temperature
Airtight containers: All opened dry goods (rice, flour, beans, nuts, dried fruit, spices, cookies, cereal) must go into sealed glass jars or hard plastic containers â original packaging is not pest-proof
Monthly inspection: Check food storage areas once per month â look for live insects crawling, moth webbing, clumping, or fine powder piles (all signs of stored product pests)
If pests found: Immediately seal infested food tightly and dispose of it in an outdoor bin â do not just pick out the bugs and continue eating; eggs and feces have contaminated the entire package
Cabinet cleanup after infestation: Empty the cabinet, vacuum all crevices thoroughly, then wipe all shelves and interior walls with a 1:1 white vinegar and water solution
First In First Out (FIFO): Label food with purchase dates and use older items first â do not hoard more than 3 months of dry goods; the older food gets, the more likely infestation becomes
Natural repellents: Place a few bay leaves or dried chili peppers in cabinet corners â natural pest deterrents that repel rice weevils and grain beetles
Pet food: Transfer dry pet food from original bags into airtight containers immediately after opening â do not scoop directly from the original bag; pet food is a hotspot for stored product pests
Temperature and humidity: Keep food storage areas cool and dry â temperatures above 25C and humidity above 60% accelerate egg hatching; avoid placing food cabinets near refrigerators or stoves
Buy smart: Bulk bin dry goods (from open markets) are far more likely to carry pest eggs than factory-sealed packages â choose vacuum-sealed products whenever possible
